Biography

Gilles Caron

A visual memory of an era, Gilles Caron (1939–1970) chronicled the major conflicts of his time through his lens. He would ultimately pay for this devotion with his life during an assignment in Cambodia.

In less than five years, Gilles Caron established a vision of rare intensity. May ’68, the Six-Day War, Biafra, Northern Ireland, and Vietnam—alongside the vibrant cultural and political ferment of the 1960s—form a body of work where history meets daily life, and liberation movements intersect with war.

Nearly sixty years later, the power of his images remains undiminished.
