In less than five years, Gilles Caron established a perspective of rare intensity on his era. From the events of May 1968, the Six-Day War, Biafra, Northern Ireland, and Vietnam, to the cultural and political ferment of the 1960s, his body of work brings together history and daily life, struggles for emancipation and the reality of war.

Nearly sixty years later, the power of his images remains undiminished. This exhibition offers a fresh look at the photographer’s work by placing his images in dialogue with those of artists who preceded, accompanied, or followed him—including Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, Marie-Laure de Decker, Luc Delahaye, Édouard Elias, and Zanele Muholi. Through these connections, divergences, and correspondences, the unique nature and enduring legacy of his vision become clear.

Gilles Caron’s images possess a painterly quality, yet they also carry a cinematic dimension. Sequences drawn from his reportage, rare Cibachrome prints, and enlarged contact sheets reveal a visual language of movement—one that even served as an inspiration for cinema, influencing directors from Francis Ford Coppola to Stanley Kubrick.
